Exposure Reduction Educational Materials

While fish is a highly nutritious food and an important part of a healthy diet, many types of fish caught in the Delta and other California water bodies contain mercury, a harmful chemical.  To protect the public’s health, fish consumption advisories have been issued for the Delta.  These advisories provide guidance on the specific types and amounts of Delta fish that can be safely eaten.

Fish Consumption Advisories for the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta are developed for the three regions shown in the map below.

A map showing the following three regions of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta in northern California: the Sacramento River and Northern Delta region, the Central and South Delta region, and the San Joaquin river region. The Sacramento River and Northern Delta region includes all waterbodies in the Delta north of California State Route 12. The northern border extends to the city of West Sacramento and the Interstate 80 freeway in Yolo County. The western border of this region extends past California State Route 113 in Solano County. The southern border of this region extends to California State Route 12 from the Sacramento River to Interstate 5. The eastern border extends to Interstate 5 in Sacramento County from just south of the city of Sacramento to the intersection of Interstate 5 and California State Route 12. The Central and South Delta region includes all waterbodies in the Delta south of California State Route 12. The northern border of this region extends to California State Route 12 from Interstate 5 to Brannan Island and along the Sacramento River.
