The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced that golden mussel, an invasive, non-native freshwater bivalve, was recently discovered by California Department of Water Resources staff during routine operations in the Port of Stockton.

This discovery marks the first known occurrence of golden mussels (Limnoperna fortunei) in North America. Golden mussels pose “a significant immediate threat to the ecological health of the Delta and all waters of the state, water conveyance systems, infrastructure and water quality,” the CDFW release says.
